   I tell everyone in my family every year I either want a card, pre-paid credit card, or money. It just makes everyone’s life easier – they don’t have to think of what to buy me and I can buy what I like.

   I am sure your family will respect your request.

   I would mention it in conversation lightly. Try to make it humorous, like "Yeah, I need money more then I need a new (blank) for Christmas/my Birthday"

   If you do end up getting a gift, see if you can return it for cash. If not, good luck.

   I think your husband means it would be rude to ask for money because it’s like assuming that person is going to get you something in the first place.

   …i’ve heard of people asking for cash but only because they intend to donate it to their favorite charities. in fact, they specifically say so in the invitation.

   other than that, i believe it would be tacky to request your friends and relatives for money gifts to cover your medical bills. what i would suggest is you subtly hint your desire and hope your friends can read you.
